When the first trailer of District 9 was released in July 2009, the sci-fi movie fans went almost crazy in anticipation of the movie’s release. Apparently, the fanfare started much before when the movie’s poster was first released in the 2008 San Diego Comic Con.
When the movie finally released in August 2009, it was received with great enthusiasm by its fans and crossed $37 million in its opening weekend alone.
Directed by Neill Blomkamp, the movie’s title was inspired the apartheid era events of District 6 in Cape Town while the story was inspired by Blomkamp-directed 2005 short film ‘Alive in Joburg’. The movie was shot in Chiawelo, Soweto.
The movie has a very interesting plot. It starts with an alien ship filled with ill and rotting aliens landing in Johannesburg in an alternate 1982. The government allocated District 9 as a refugee camp for the aliens but the locals and the aliens never find peace with each other and there were constant conflicts between the two parties.
Finally in 2010, the government decides to relocate the aliens and hires a mercenary organization by the name MNU to complete the job. From there the story takes a surprising turn with aliens collecting a small canister of their biological weapons technology and Wikus (an African beuraecrat) being infected by it.
Apart from 4 Academy awards, the movie also won the Saturn Award presented by the Academy of Science Fiction.
